India’s TB fight now has an X factor: AI-powered portable kit for early, fast detection

AI-powered, hand-held X-ray devices have been introduced into India’s national TB programme to enable rapid, on-site screening of vulnerable populations, especially in remote areas. These portable, battery-operated systems—validated by ICMR and including models like Prognosys’ Prorad Atlas (a sister company of Molbio Diagnostics)—can produce diagnostic-quality chest X-rays in seconds. Used during a recent 100-day campaign, the technology helped identify over 2.85 lakh asymptomatic TB cases. By integrating AI with portable diagnostics, these devices are helping close the gap in undiagnosed TB and supporting early intervention efforts.
